Concrete v Abstract Psalm 34:8

Other Hebrew applications

  • Hear — shema שמע

"Shema Yisrael..." Hear, O Israel. Hearing does not mean "Listen to this announcement." It means, "Hear, internalize, and take action right now.“

  • Compassion — Rachamim רַחֲמִים

This word is the plural of rechem, which means "womb." To feel deep compassion or maternal love for someone means your womb or your deepest internal organs are physically wrenching or moving toward them.

  • Sadness or Despair — Nafshi נַפְשִׁי

While nefesh is often translated abstractly as "soul“, its concrete, physical meaning is, "throat" or "neck." When a biblical writer "feels" overwhelming sorrow, they describe the throat choking up and gasping for air.

  • Courage or will — Lev לֵב

The heart, lev, in Hebrew thought is not the seat of romance; it is the physical organ of thoughts, decisions, and courage. To feel brave is to have a "firm heart." To feel terrified is to have a heart that "melts like wax."

  • Anger — Charon af חֲר֥וֹן אַף

This literally translates to the "burning of the nose, af." It describes the physical sensation of heat in the face and flaring nostrils when a person becomes enraged.

Jesus in Psalm 34

Psalm 34:8 “Taste and see that the Lord is good”, has 13 Hebrew letters. Jesus was the 13th man.

We should therefore keep our eyes fixed on Jesus Who died for the sin of the world on the cross.

Psalm 34 further connects to Jesus through verse 20. He keeps all His bones; not one of them is broken.

Jesus fulfilled this prophesy when He died on the cross.

John 19:36 “For these things took place that Scripture might be fulfilled: ‘Not one of His bones will be broken.’”

The number 125

  • The numerical value of the word ta’amu, taste, is 125.
  • Hebrew Strong’s #H7993 shalak שלך appears 125 times in the Old Testament. It means to throw or cast.
  • The Hebrew word nagash נגש appears 125 times in the Hebrew Bible, Strong’s H#5066. This word means to draw near.

The numerical value of the word ta’amu and the number of occurrences of shalak and nagash, link the concept of taste to cast and draw near.

Conclusion

In contrast to Western thinking, Hebrew makes use of imagery.

Imagery is descriptive language that appeals to the reader's physical senses like sight, sound, smell, touch and taste which builds a vivid mental picture.

Tasting that the Lord is good therefore evaluates and internalizes the goodness of God which comes from the experience of drawing near to God and casting your cares upon Him.

Prayer

May the Lord give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which He has called you.
