A theophany is a visible, tangible, or audible manifestation of a deity to a human being.

A Christophany is an appearance or visible manifestation of Jesus Christ outside of his earthly life.

Was the angel of the Lord a theophany or a Christophany or someone different?

Genesis 16:7 “The angel of Lord found her by a spring of water in the wilderness, the spring on the way to Shur”.

Genesis 22:11 “But the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said ‘Abraham, Abraham!’”

Exodus 3:2 “And the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire out of the midst of the bush”.

Exodus 14:19 “Then the angel of God who was going before the host of Israel moved and went behind them…”.

Judges 6:11 “Now the Angel of the Lord came and sat under the terebinth tree which was in Ophrah, which belonged to Joash the Abiezrite, while his son Gideon was beating out wheat in the winepress, to hide it from the Midianites. And the Angel of the Lord appeared to him, and said to him, “The Lord is with you, you mighty man of valour!”

In Genesis 16:17, the angel of the Lord was the Lord who spoke to Hagar, El Roi  אֵ֣ל רֳאִ֑י, the God Who sees.

In Genesis 22:11, the angel of the Lord is the God that provided the ram for the sacrifice. Yahweh Yireh יִרְאֶ֑ה, יהוה. The God Who provides.

In Exodus 3:2, the angel of the Lord identifies Himself as the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, אֱלֹהֵי אַבְרָהָם אֱלֹהֵי יִצְחָקַ וְאֱלֹהֵי יעֲקֹב.

In Exodus 14:19, the angel of the Lord was the Lord of Hosts, Yahweh Sabaoth  יהוה צבאות . The God of the heavenly armies.

In Judges 6:11, the angel of the Lord was the Lord God, אֲדֹנָ֣י יהוה Adonai Yahweh, the God who knows where to find you.”

The sum of the numerical values of the letters in the word malak is 36.

The numerical value of Yahweh is 26.

These two numbers added together is 62, the reverse or mirror of 26. The angel of the Lord is the mirror in which the God, Who reveals Himself to man, can be seen.

Luke 1:35, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called Holy — the Son of God." Jesus, as the Son of God, demonstrated God’s omnipotence.

Judas (not Iscariot) ask Jesus how He would manifest Himself to them, John 14:22,

 “Lord, how is it that You will manifest Yourself to us and not the world?” 

John 14:16, “And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper to be with you forever”. This reflects God’s omnipresence.

John 14:26 “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, Whom the Father will sent in My name, will teach you all things”. This reflects God’s omniscience. 

The Angel of the Lord is the physical manifestation of the God Who created heaven and earth. In the Old Testament texts selected, He presented Himself as the omnipresent God to Hagar, the God Who sees, the Redeemer and Covenant keeping God to Abraham, the omnipotent God to Moses and the omniscient God to Gideon.

Today, God manifests Himself through the Holy Spirit. This is available to everyone who is born again by the Spirit.
