The root word from which the word ומהלל ve’mehullal is derived, is halal הלל, which means praise. 

Biblically praise can be defined as a verbal expression that commends God’s glory and that gives thanks for His character and great deeds particularly by singing.

A doxology is a short hymn or expression of praise to God.

The word comes from the Greek words doxa, meaning "glory" or "praise," and logos, meaning "word" or "saying". It literally translates to “words of glory”.

Paul concludes the letter of Romans with a doxology.

Romans 16:27 “To the only wise God be glory forevermore through Jesus Christ!”

The word hallelujah is a combination of two Hebrew words:



Hallel הלל – Praise,

and

Yah יה – the Lord.

The Merriam Webster’s Dictionary states that praise as a transitive verb expresses commendation and glory especially for attributes and perfections.

God should be praised:

•Because He is the creator of the world;

• Because of His splendour and glory;

• Because He is Saviour of the world;

• Because He forgives sin.

The numerical value of the Hebrew word Elohim, Who is the creator of the world, is also 86.

Embedded in the numerical value of the word Elohim, God, is the concept of praise. This is not an accident. Isaiah 43:7 states that God created man for the praise of His glory and Isaiah 43:21, that man must

declare His praise.

This is not just an Old Testament idea. 1 Corinthians 10:31 states "So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God."
